February DO NOT LEASE List

February 2009’s DO NOT LEASE list. What qualifies a car on this list? Simple, the residual value needs to be dip well below 50% over 36 months, the money factor needs to be higher than .00200 or 4.8% APR and cash rebates are either nonexistant or only available to a select few. Check this list often because I will be adding more models as I encounter more and more crappy lease rates.

2009 Mercedes SL550

* Money factor too high, residual too low, car too expensive.

2009 Mercedes S

* Money factor too high, residual too low, car too expensive.

2009 Honda Ridgeline

* I don’t think Honda is looking to move the Ridgeline through leasing any time soon.

2009 Mercedes R350

* This isn’t actually too bad, but I don’t like the pricetag or the residual.

2009 Mercedes ML

* The ML350 is nice, but the ML320 is nicer. I’d skip these or just buy them.

2009 Mercedes GL

* The GL450 isn’t too bad actually, but skip the GL550

2009 Mercedes G

* BUY IT, otherwise, look elsewhere.

2009 Mercedes E

* Residuals are horrid. I recommend buying.

2009 Mercedes CLS

* CLS550 a borderline MAYBE. AMG model would be a BUY recommendation.

2009 Mercedes CLK

* CLK money factors are low, but so are the residuals. BUY.

2009 Mercedes CL

* Money factors too high, residuals too low. BUY candidate.

2009 Audi TT

* I’d buy a TT, not so sure about leasing one unless there’s a lot of discounts.

2009 Audi Q7

* If there a lot of discounts to offset the low residual, I wouldn’t touch this car with the “leasing” stick..

2009 Audi A8/S8 3.6

* Just buy it already…

2008 Cayman

* Buy it, its a Porsche anyway, you might get some decent cash discounts since its a 2008 model.

09 Mercedes Benz ML320 Lease Rates for February 2009

My Take: The ML320 isn’t a bad lease this month since the residual is higher than the rest of the MLs and the money factor is the lowest of all MLs as well. The problem is that since it’s a diesel, availability may be a problem. For example, my local dealer only has one. There is a “special” lease offer going on right now where the dealer contributes $1,589.06 and you pay $4424 at signing to get $579 per month payments for a 36 month lease/10k miles per year. If you don’t already know how I feel about “lease specials” then this is what you should know, they RARELY work out the way they are advertised. If anything, that’s just a way to get you into the dealership. Considering this car’s availability, you probably won’t find one equipped exactly as advertised in order to get those payments. So what would I do it? Use that as a rough guide to give you an idea as to how much the dealer is willing to contribute to lower your sale price.

09 Mercedes Benz CLK-Class Lease Rates for February 2009

My Take: The CLK350 Coupe looks best on a 48-month lease. It still pricey since the residuals are so low, but the money factor is great. The convertible is better as a 36-month lease. I would avoid the CLK550s.
Can’t say I recommend them as lease, I would probably buy it since these cars lose more than 50% of their value within 3 years.

MY TAKE: Don’t lease, buy…if you can afford it. Seriously, what CAN I SAY? These numbers are as bad as most leases financed through Ford Credit’s.

My Take: The C63 is not a vehicle you should be leasing, so remember to buy it if you are itching for that ride. As for the rest of the C-Class, I’m noticing that the C’s are leasing better at the 36 and 48 month terms than on the 24. MB is clearly pushing lessees towards the longer terms by bumping the money factor on up on the 24 month terms. Personally, I think the 24 month leases are a thing of the past. Residual values have taken a dive in the past year and it is clear to automakers that short term leases are money losers. Compared to January, the C-Class 4matic models’ lease rates have come down a bit, so that should save you some money every month. The C350 came down a bit too this month so that’s worth a look as well. Again, there are special financing programs available on the C-Class, however, I think the money factors are low enough to go with leasing instead.

As an added bonus, I spec’ed out a C350 with the Pano Moonroof, Premium 2 Package, 6-disc cd player, ipod connector and walnut trim for a MSRP of $43110. Assuming you can get $2000 under invoice ($38154) sale price, 48-month lease, 12k miles per year, 8.25% sales tax (So Cal), inception fees due at signing; you are looking at approximately $438 per month ($462 if you only get $1000 below invoice). I know the sale price may seem like a stretch, but if you think about it, it really isn’t. Back in Sept 2008, when the 09 C-Class was brand-spanking new, I’ve heard of dealers offering $1000 under invoice. Things were better then. We are now 5 months into the 09 model year, not to mention Audi is giving out $2000 under invoice on their A4s, so do I think $2000 under invoice on the more expensive C350 is possible? HELL YEAH! Getting into a C350 never looked so good.

MY TAKE: Here are the remaining Mercedes-Benz Lease Rates that I don’t recommend. Clearly, you can see why. The residual values are either terrible or the money factor is sky high. Then, you have a combination of both crap residuals and crap money factors. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to tell you why I don’t recommended the following cars. Keep in mind that these recommendations do not reflect my personal feelings towards these rides. I won’t say no to a C63 AMG or a SLK55 AMG. All I am saying is that if you plan on getting into any of these rides, buy them, don’t lease them.

09 Mercedes Benz Lease Rates for January 2009

My Take: I thought I’d share a funny little thing I noticed while looking over the prices of the C300 Sport sedan. The 2008 C300 Sport’s base price starts at $31,600 while the 2009 C300 Sport’s base price starts at $32,900. From what I understand, nothing’s changed between the two model years, at least, nothing immediately noticeable. It just fascinates me how manufacturers keep bumping up the price tag every year (and I’m not even counting destination fees here). At this rate, the C-Class will cost about $40k base price by 2015. So much for “entry-level” luxury sedan. LOL. Anyway, the rates look slightly better than December 2008 thanks to a lower money factor and only a small 2% drop on residual. As for the rest of the Mercs, I’m very surprised to see the GL, ML, R and SLKs showing decent lease rates in January. Heck, I’m surprised to see any lease support at all coming from these guys.

09 Mercedez-Benz Lease Rates for December 2008

My Take: You probably want to stick with the C, CLK, CLS, E (MAYBE), GL and ML classes this month. Everything else seems like it will cost you far more than you should be paying. The models previously mentioned enjoy a fairly low money factor and a decent residual value. You probably want to opt for the 12k mile leases and maybe extend the lease to 48 month. Unlike BMW, Mercedes Benz seem to lease better in the 36-month and 48-month terms. With Warranty covering up to 48 months, you should be taken cared of in case something happens to your Benzo. Now the question is, do you really want to drive the same car 4 straight years? Personally, I have leased both 36-month and 48-month leases and I find that 48 month leases just a tad “too long”. In 4 years, I tend to find way too many flaws in one car and I end up not enjoying the latter part of my lease. Of course, it if works out in the budget, 48 month isn’t too bad, just keep your miles low (lower than your contracted allowance) and you can probably end your lease in advance by trading it in, you might even get some money back.
