0.9% APR on 08 G37 Coupe expires 1/5/2009

There you have it! It is a good time to get into the 08 Infiniti G37 coupe. You can’t really beat 0.9% for up to 60 months. You won’t find a money factor low enough to make leasing more attractive. I know most of you visit this side to lease, but sometimes, even I have to admit that it makes sense to buy. This is specially the case when you are dealing with an end-of-the-year “clearance” situation and the interest rate is much lower than the money factor. (You can convert the money factor into an interest rate by multiplying the money factor by 2400.)

Here’s a scenerio:

  • Infinti G37 Journey Sport and Premium
  • MSRP $41,515
  • Sale Price $37,947

Using last month’s lease rates, a 36mo/15k lease will run you about $497 per month + tax, with about $1500 do at signing.

A purchase on the other hand, will cost about $621 + tax with about the same amount down, over 60 months.

Basically, for about $124 more per month, you OWN the car (once your loan is paid off). Last months lease rate charges an interest rate of about 5.16%, so buying is clearly the “smarter” financial move.  Just make sure you can afford to make the payments. Time and time again, I hear of people who overestimated their ability to afford a new car and end up ruining their credit scores because of it.

October 2008 Lease Rate for 08/09 Acura TL

My Take: The new 09 Acura TL is finally out and it’s looking alright, from a leasing standpoint. The residual value is high, the money factor is also kind of high, but that’s Honda’s standard rate, so it’s not TOO bad. Check out MBs lease rates and you’ll see what I mean. The price range for the TL has gone up considerably, with the base model starting at around $35k. I don’t recommend leasing this car since I’m pretty sure invoice price will be hard to come by. If you do, please leave a comment, inquring minds want to know. For those shopping for an 08 model, there’s about $3500 worth of dealer cash, so that should help offselt the less than desirable residual value and money factors.

UPDATE: I have updated the lease rates for the month. The 24mo lease seems to be a horrible lease right now. That seems to be the trend for most cars nowadays thanks to the financial crisis, it seems short-term leases aren’t as attractive. You may want to consider the 48mo lease in this case. The MF drops and the residual holds steady at 54%, which is better than most 36mo leases.

October 2008 Lease Rate for 08 BMW Models

My Take: According to the file acquired from BimmerFile, the lease rates for all BMW 08 models should remain the same through the month of October. If anything changes, I will be sure to update this post with the new rates. Some 3-series, 5-series, X3 and X5 models remain decent leasing candidates on the 36-month term, so be sure to check them out.

October 2008 Lease Rate for 09 Nissan Maxima

My Take: These rates are actually as of Sept 30th, since Tarry posted them a bit late. I’ll keep an eye out for the new numbers in case they pop up. In the meantime, feel free use this as “reference”. There isn’t any lease support anyway, so the lease should get cheaper over time.

UPDATE: The rates have indeed stayed the same as last month for the Maxima. Nothing to cheer about really. Maybe next month they’ll drop the MF a bit and keep the residual the same. That would be a good way to get these rides moving.

Smart Car…Is it really?

If you haven’t heard, Daimler-Chrysler has officially brought the new Smart ForTwo model to the USA.  It seems like a good idea.  With fuel prices skyrocketing with no end in sight, why not bring a super compact, efficient automobile to America.  They’ve been selling the Smart Car in Europe for about a decade now and it’s been reasonably successful.

I thought it was a pretty good idea as well.  What’s there not to love?  You get German engineering, great fuel economy, and it’s got to be one of the easiest cars to park.  However, once I looked at the spec sheets and comparable “normal” cars, I had my doubts.

Smart or Not?
Base Price Powerplant Performance Fuel Type Seats EPA
Smart ForTwo $11,590 1.0L, 71HP, 3 cyl, 5 sp auto 0-60, 14.1 secs Premium 2 33/41
Nissan Versa 1.8S $12,990 1.8L, 122HP, 4 cyl, 6 sp manual 0-60, 9.5 secs Regular 5 26/31
Toyota Yaris $11,550 1.5L, 106HP, 4 cyl, 5 sp manual 0-60, 9.48 secs Regular 5 29/36
Honda Fit $13,950 1.5L, 109HP, 4 cyl, 5 sp manual 0-60, 9.0 secs Regular 5 27/34
Scion xD $14,550 1.8L, 128HP, 4 cyl, 5 sp manual 0-60, 8.4 secs Regular 5 27/33
Ford Focus $14,395 2.0L, 140HP, 4 cyl, 5 sp manual 0-60, 8.3 secs Regular 5 24/35

The problem I have with the Smart car is that I expected more.  I’m not saying that the mileage isn’t great.  An EPA rated 33/41 for a non-hybrid is pretty awesome, but when you take into consideration that it only seats two and requires premium fuel, you start to furrow your brow a little.  Maybe it’ll make up in sheer price?  The price is pretty low at a base MSRP of just $11,590, but then your eyes look down the list and you see that the Toyota Yaris is around the same price, has more power, better performance, seats five, drinks regular fuel, and still manages to get 29/36!

September 2008 Lease Rate for 08 Mercedes Benz ML-Class

My Take: Nothing to get too excited about here. You may get discounts on the sale price, but that MF and residual effectively offset any discounts you get. Pass. May want to try Leasecompare.com to see if 3rd party bank rates are better.

September 2008 Lease Rate for 08 Honda Odyssey

My Take: No deals here on the Odyssey. You may be able to get a decent sale price, but you won’t get any help in the residual/mf department. As with most Hondas, watch out for the models with RES. The residual values drop significantly, which will make your payments jump.

September 2008 Lease Rate for 08 Subaru WRX STi

My Take: There is about $500 worth of dealer contribution available for the STi. Whether the dealer wants to contribute is a whole other story. I’m willing to bet that as we approach the end of the month, they will be motivated to do so.
Rates are pretty mediocre right now, so you will have to rely heavily on your negotiating skills to get yourself a decent deal out of this. I wouldn’t exactly hold my breath thought. Don’t forget about MSDs, they can really help lower the monthly payments. It beats using your money as cap cost reduction.
