09 Toyota Prius Lease Rates for January 2009

My Take: The Prius has a $500 rebate available to customers, which makes this car slightly cheaper to lease than in the past. You probably won’t get this car at invoice + the $500 rebate, but you will certainly get it at $500 under MSRP. The residual value is fairly strong which will help keep the your payments lower than most cars despite the fact that the money factor is high. Just watch out for the options, this ride gets expensive quick.

On another note, I’ve updated the January 2009 DO NOT LEASE list with more cars. I figure I’d get those out there soon since we’re near the end of the month.

09 Subaru Legacy Lease Rates for January 2009

My Take: I haven’t posted a Subaru lease rate in a while so it is refreshing to see that Subaru’s actually lease alright this month. As you can see, the sweet spot for this vehicle is at 36-months, so make sure you don’t go beyond that (warranty won’t cover you past the 3rd year anyway so that’s certainly something to keep in mind). There’s about $1000 worth of dealer cash available so make sure to put your negotiating skills into action. The Legacy is going for $400 under invoice according to TMV, so I wouldn’t pay any more than that. There is also special financing available, but it breaks down to around the same as a lease (in terms of interest rate), so no point buying.

09 Infiniti FX35 Lease Rates for January 2009

My Take: The FX looks like a decent lease this month as well. TM suggest near invoice price, which is good news. Factoring the $2000 lease cash available and you are probably looking at around $2000 below invoice on a FX35 lease right now. You do want to avoid the 24-month lease however. That one is clearly not a good deal since the MF is inflated adn the residual is low.

09 Toyota Camry Lease Rates for January 2009

My Take: If you are shopping around for a family sedan, the Toyota Camry looks like a solid lease this month. There is a about $1500 worth in cash rebates available, so be sure to factor that into your negotiations. That should drop the Camry well below invoice since TMV suggests only a few hundred over invoice as the sale price.

09 Nissan Murano Lease Rate for January 2009

My Take: The Murano looks like a potential lease this month since there’s some lease support available of it. The residual value looks somewhat inflated (a good thing) and the money factor, despite being reduced, is still hovering around the 3.7% APR range. Not bad, not great. The good news is that TMV suggest the Murano S AWD going for about $47 over invoice plus you get a nice $500 cash rebate to go with it. Personally, I think invoice plus the $500 cash rebate is VERY doable. The calculations below do not reflect the $500 rebate, so you can probably do better.

DO NOT LEASE 09 Volvo C30 Lease Rates for January 2009

MY TAKE: I’m sure some of you have started to see the C30 on the street by now. It’s that ugly looking hatchback from Volvo. It even comes in olive green! Nothing says “puke” like a Volvo C30 in olive green. Anyway, if you were thinking of leasing this “wonderful” little hatchback, you may want to try some independent banks because Ford Credit very eager to lease any of these little rides apparently.

09 MINI Cooper Lease Rates for January 2009

My Take: Here are some more decent rates from the folks over at MINI. As expected, the residual value has dropped some since my post in November 2008 (about 5%). However, BMWFS did compensate by dropping the money factor a bit. I don’t think its enough to make it a better deal than November, but considering all the terrible leases I’ve seen this January, I think this one is actually still fairly good. The residuals will continue to drop til the 2010 models arrive and the money factors will fluctuate up and dow from month-to-month. If you are looking to catch a nice deal on a lease, research diligently. I compare this to playing the stock market or buying a home, you snap it up when you think its best. You won’t always catch the lower rates, so just go with your gut instincts.
Here’s a scenerio for ya. I equipped a Cooper S with Premium/Sport/Convenience/Aero packages + auto tranny + xenon lights for about $29,600 MSRP. With some haggling, I’m thinking a $500 discount could be attained, dropping the cap cost to about $29,100. At this price, a 36mo/10k lease would run me about $399 after taxes (8.25% CA tax). Not bad huh? At 12k miles per year, that payment goes up to $408 a month. Take off a few packages and you’ll see this number drop.

09 VW GTI Lease Rates for January 2009

My Take: After all the bad lease rates, here’s a little sunshine through those dark clouds. The GTI’s lease rates are relatively reasonable this month, so it might not bad a bad idea to give them a look if you want a compact hatchback in your driveway. It did go up a little bit since November, but it is still a relatively good lease. I’ve always enjoyed the GTI and was originally looking into leasing one instead of the TSX we currently have. Unfortunately for VW, the TSX was too hard to give up, but I do love the GTI’s DSG transmission. It is smooth and responsive and a lot of fun to drive. Don’t forget the $500 loyalty cash available to existing VW customers.
